I warmly welcome you to this musical offering of some of my recent compositions. I imagine this music as originating from a sort of metaphysical melting pot of sounds and sonic ideas; this vessel floats throughout the ether, coming occasionally into reach and allowing the composer to peep inside, and draw from it some of the essence (essence of what? Dreams? Thoughts? Of something human? Or cosmic? Something natural? An event? A life principle? An emotion? Music itself? Or, perhaps, a pinch of this and a drop of that?). Sometimes the pot is generous, pouring forth a multitude of ideas and solutions. Sometimes, however, it is stubborn, and refuses even to come near.
Brina Jež Brezavšček

Brina Jež Brezavšček has composed for a diverse range of instrument combinations. Most prominent in her catalogue are works of chamber music, of which she has authored some 50 to date. Notable in her catalogue are the chamber opera Frightened Horses, the music-theatrical work, Refuges, works for orchestra (Sonsong or Sound Variations, and the cantata  for mixed choir & orchestra, Dreams of the Year on a poem by Gregor Strniša), a number of works for voice (ranging from soloist to choir), pieces intended to be performed by children, and electro-acoustic works (such as Orpheus for bass clarinet and electronics [commissioned by Music Biennale Zagreb], Two Parisian Vocal Studies [realised in Studios GRM in Paris] Earth, and The Flax Heckler on a poem by David Howard).

She is at the cutting-edge of contemporary musical-thought, often collaborating closely with performers in order to develop and explore new playing-techniques. In addition to this, her works often contain scenic & theatrical elements (in Seven Soft Illusions, for example). These aspects give rise to music which is a testament to Jež Brezavšček’s singularly refined and delicate aural sensibility. Her compositions have been performed extensively throughout Slovenia and in Croatia, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, France, Austria, Serbien, Lithuania, Romania and the United States.

Brina Jež Brezavšček studied composition under Uroš Krek at the Ljubljana Academy of Music (graduating in 1981), and musicology at the University of Ljubljana. She has taken part in master-classes and workshops for piano performance in Hungary, for composition in Grožnjan, Croatia & Darmstadt, and for electro-acoustic music in Belgrade & Graz. In 1994 she worked in the field of electro-acoustic music at the CIRM Studio in Nice and at the GRM studio in Paris. She is assistant Professor at the Faculty of Education, University of Ljubljana.

Ever at the forefront of contemporary music in Slovenia, she was the founder in 1991, and until 2000 the president, of the MUZINA Society for Contemporary Music. Later she directed the collective Sirius A B.
