In cooperation with Radio Slovenia - First Program and RTV Slovenia Music Production ZKP RTV Slovenia is releasing the album Roads. The initiator for this project and collaboration was composer, trombonist and arranger Lojze Krajnčan who suggested to pianist and composer Marko Churnchetz to arrange some of his earlier compositions that had already been recorded on his previous albums with smaller groups for a big band. The album which is available in digital form and as a CD has been recorded in Studio 26 of Radio Slovenia with the Big Band RTV Slovenia under the baton of Lojze Krajnčan and Marko Churnchetz as a piano soloist. „When we look back at music history, we can see that one of the reasons why the concept of big bands arose is that there were no sound amplifiers. The only way to make a band to sound “big” and loud was mass, which meant more musicians playing instead of a small group. Moreover, big bands had to sound loud because they initially only had one function: entertainment. Jazz in the 1930s was mainly dance swing music performed by big bands. Later, big bands began to have a different function: performing arts. The change was brought about by composers of genius who started to compose more complex works for big jazz orchestras. Among them were Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Gil Evans, Woody Herman and others. This kind of writing also featured soloists as virtuosos on their instruments. Nowadays, it is rare for a jazz musician to have an opportunity to work regularly with a big band as leader/soloist. Small combos are much more common and popular. That is why I am really excited to have this special opportunity. It was Lojze Krajnčan who came up with the idea for this project and collaboration, and I am truly grateful for his energy and determination. The process of making the music for this album was special: we decided that Lojze would arrange some of my earlier compositions that had already been recorded on my previous albums with smaller groups. This is usually not an easy task, but as a top-class arranger Lojze really understood my artistic vision and captured the spirit of my music. That is why I believe these songs are even richer on this album. I also contributed two of the arrangements, which are my first big band arrangements. I hope you enjoy this album as much as I do,” said Churnchetz about the album.
