An epic film about the National War of Liberation. The screenplay was written by Ciril Kosmač based on his short story Očka Orel and the film was directed by then 28-year-old France Štiglic (who previously received a bronze lion in Venice for the film Mladina gradi). »Today it is generally considered that the film On Our Own Land was a great success and in this respect it is widely considered to be the foundation stone of the Slovenian national cinematography" (Dr. Peter Stanković, film historian). The film was shot from February to June 1948, premiered on 20 November 1948 at the Union cinema in Ljubljana, and was also screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

The film is now available online in a digitized and restored version, in the pristine quality seen by viewers at the premiere in 1948.

SYNOPSIS

The story is set in the western (Littoral) district of Slovenia, during the last two years of the liberation struggle. A typical Slovenian village survived first the Italian Occupation (since the Treaty of Rapallo after the First World War) and then the German one. To its inhabitants, all of them Slovenes, the struggle means a chance to liberate themselves from underneath the foreign rule. The film is on the one hand a war film about the partisan struggle, and on the other the villagers who were practically all supporters of the liberation struggle.

In the first post-war Slovenian feature film play Lojze Potokar (Sova), France Presetnik (Stane), Mileva Zakrajšek (Angelca), Štefka Drolc (Tildica), Miro Kopač (očka Orel), Avgusta Danilova (Obrekarica), Majda Potokar (Nančika), Boris Sešek (Boris), Stane Sever (Drejc), Angela Rakar (Dragarica), Jure Vizjak (Bichi) and Franjo Kumer (Kutschera). The screenplay is written by Ciril Kosmač, the film is directed by France Štiglic, the director of photography and editor is Ivan Marinček, the author of the music is Marjan Kozina, the produsction designers are Boris Kobe and Tone Mlakar, the costume designer is Mija Jarc and the make-up artist is Mara Kralj.
